Vanlife with your dog: here’s what you need to know

Muddy paws, a soaked coat, or an unexpected swim? A portable dog blow dryer is a game changer. A quick blast, and your pup is fresh and dry again. Plus, it saves you from dealing with damp towels all over the camper.

Stackable is the way to go! Our favorite? Lightweight bamboo bowls. James even carries his own bowl to scout out the best dinner spot with a view. Bonus: they’re strong and sustainable!

Safety first! A loose dog in the van while driving? Not an option. A seatbelt or dog car seat keeps your furry co-pilot safe and secure while you focus on the road. And a car seat gives extra comfort. Your dog sits higher, has a better view, and is less likely to get car sick. Our setup? James strapped in the back, enjoying the best view… though if you ask him, he’d rather be up front with us!

No road trip is complete without snacks! We always pack a stash of chew bones and treats to keep James happy on the go. And because he loves a mental challenge, we bring a snuffle mat or brain game to keep him entertained between naps and adventures.

Before any big trip, we take James to the vet for a health check, vaccinations, and travel advice. We also pack his pet passport; some countries require it. A first aid kit is a must: stomach meds, a tick remover, and honey ointment for small cuts and scrapes are always in our van.

Long trips mean a little grooming is inevitable. We always bring a brush, comb, nail clippers, and a trimmer to keep James looking sharp and tangle-free. We also pack shampoo and detangle spray, because you never know when a mud bath or sandy beach day will require an emergency spa session!

A new campsite every night, but a familiar blanket? That makes all the difference. James always has his favorite plaid with him, plus his beloved stuffed animal for that extra bit of comfort, no matter where we are.

For long hikes, we bring a dog backpack. Although, to be honest, James has more energy than we do! Still, you never know when he might need a little break while we huff and puff up a hill. For bike rides, though, the backpack is a must. Fluffy ears in the wind, living his best celebrity life. And of course, we always carry a water bottle with a built-in bowl, because hydration is key!

Not the most glamorous item, but absolutely essential. No matter where we are; city, beach, or mountains, we always have enough poop bags on hand. And a towel is a must for wiping off muddy paws before hopping back into the van.
