Croatia surprised us
From mountain views to crystal-clear bays, charming coastal towns to doggy beach bars, Croatia really blew us away. That said, we did have to shorten our original route a bit. Summer heat can be intense, and while James is a seasoned adventurer, some days were simply too hot to handle.
Our tip: if you want to explore actively with your dog, go in spring or autumn. The temperatures are more comfortable, and your pup will thank you for it. No overheated paws or sun fatigue.
1. First stop: Plitvice National Park

We kicked things off strong: Plitvice is Croatia’s oldest and largest national park. Picture emerald lakes, wooden walkways, and more than 90 waterfalls. Absolutely stunning! We hiked the longest route (around 14 km), which is fully dog-friendly. James loved it: cool spots, shaded trails, and fresh water everywhere. Highly recommended!
We stayed at Camp Korana, where you can park on a grassy field with plenty of space and shade, ideal for dogs.
2. Dubrovnik

Stepping into Dubrovnik feels like walking onto a movie set! The historic old town is full of narrow streets, scenic views, and a charming harbor. Not surprisingly, parts of Game of Thrones were filmed here. Fans will spot it instantly.
Dogs aren’t allowed on the famous city walls, so you’ll need to take turns exploring. For the best views, head up to Mount Srđ (by foot or cable car).
Food tip: Try Rudjer! A lovely location, great food, and super dog-friendly!
We stayed at Camping Solitudo, just outside the city. Great base..
3. Split & surroundings

Time for a breather? We relaxed just outside Split at Camping Stobreč Split. A dog-friendly spot right on the sea, with its own dog beach and a cozy restaurant overlooking the bay.
We chose to take it slow for a few days, but if you’re in the mood for city vibes, Split is definitely worth a visit: an old town full of history, buzzing terraces and top-notch food.
4. Hvar Island

Hvar is known as the St. Tropez of Croatia — and rightly so! Think luxury yachts, pretty alleys, clear blue water and chilled beach vibes.
We took the ferry from Split (camper and dog on board — no problem) and stayed at Camp Vira, close to Hvar Town.
Make sure to visit Jelsa, a cozy wine village where dogs are welcome on the terrace. And don’t skip the Pakleni Islands: perfect for swimming, sunning and exploring hidden coves by boat.
5. Crikvenica: Monty’s Dog Beach Bar

Craving a lazy beach day with your pup? Monty’s Dog Beach Bar in Crikvenica is the place to be! Set right on the water and fully designed with dogs in mind — with doggy ice cream, toys, shaded areas, water bowls, and even sunbeds you can share. James loved it and so did we!
Bonus: there’s a second Monty’s location on Rab Island. Add it to your list if you’re in the area.
6. Rovinj: a colorful goodbye

Our final stop in Croatia was Rovinj, often called the most colorful city in the country. With its pastel houses, winding alleys and sea views, it’s the perfect blend of charming and relaxed.
We stayed at Maistra Camping Vestar, a luxe campsite with spacious pitches right by the water. The perfect spot to wrap up the trip in style.
7. Bonus: Dolomites, Italy

On our way home, we made a detour into the mountains — and it was so worth it! In San Vigilio di Marebbe, Italy, we enjoyed crisp air, alpine peaks and much-needed coolness after the Croatian sun.
We stayed at Camping Al Plan — clean, welcoming, beautifully located, and walking distance to a cute village with shops, restaurants and even free public transport to explore the area. A perfect end to our adventure.
Even more tips (for next time!)
There were more places on our wishlist… but hey, you don’t have to do it all at once. These are still on our radar for a future trip:
Krk Island – super dog-friendly, with three great dog beaches: Porat, Boska and Medane.
Pula – visit the impressive Roman arena, or take a swim at nature spot Kamenjak. Also nearby: Fazana, a charming coastal town with a dog beach.
Novigrad – a hidden gem! Check out the Dog Dream Beach & Bar, stroll under colorful umbrellas and enjoy the sea view from the Belvedere lookout.
